Authors: James Plumb, Partner & Gemma Sweeney, Solicitor

The Mineral and Energy Resources and Other Legislation Amendment Bill 2020 (MEROLA Bill) was introduced to Parliament in February and, if passed, will see a number of key changes to Queensland’s resources regulatory regime.

Some of the policy objectives addressed by the Bill include:

  1. proposed improvements to health and safety via the extension of industrial manslaughter laws to the mining, quarrying and oil & gas sectors;

  3. the introduction of various measures to improve regulatory efficiency.

The Bill proposes to amend 14 different Acts and other supporting regulations.
