TAG Alliances Annual Review 2020

Success Stories

Each year, our members around the world provide numerous Success Stories detailing how their firms have leveraged their TAG Alliances Membership to benefit their firm and their clients. In video and text format below, our members reflect on their experiences as a TAG Alliances member and detail some of the Success Stories they experienced in 2020.

"With the Support of TAGLaw..."

"With the support of TAGLaw, we have successfully found several TAGLaw member firms located in Europe and the Middle East who have provided valuable legal assistance to our client. We have also received legal requests from a U.S. TAGLaw member during 2020 with whom we have cooperated several times."

–Backy Wu, Zhuoxin Law Firm (Guangzhou, China - TAGLaw)

"...Superb Service..."

"Some time ago, we sought some advice as to a potential expansion to California, USA, with a new concept of one of our clients. Anthony A. Adler from Mitchell Silberberg & Knupp LLP (MSK) (Los Angeles, California, USA - TAGLaw) generously gave us the necessary output and a clear recommendation. So when we needed help with the registration of a U.S. trademark for our client, MSK was a natural choice. Evan M. Kent from MSK provided superb service and secured the registration swiftly. Plus, on the day the U.S. trademark certificate from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office was delivered to our office, Howard Shapiro of MSK recommended us to one of his very interesting clients. That's what TAGLaw is about in our view!"

––Jiri Ctibor; Z/C/H Legal v.o.s. (Czech Republic - TAGLaw)

––Lina Uribe García; Gómez-Pinzón Abogados S.A.S. (Colombia - TAGLaw)

"...Quality Help..."

"Through our TAGLaw membership, we are able to connect with lawyers at high-quality firms like ours all across the globe. Being able to get quality help in different jurisdictions regionally, nationally, and internationally is a great benefit to the firm and our clients, in addition to the inbound referrals that we get. In addition to law firms, we have access to quality accounting firms and other businesses that provide services related to what it is we do—for example, there is an insurance member and a cybersecurity provider. In our deals, sometimes clients need Directors & Officers insurance or representations and warranties insurance, so it is great to have that access to members in these areas who can jump in as well. "

––Paul Tauber; Coblentz, Patch, Duffy & Bass LLP (San Francisco, California, USA - TAGLaw)

"...Relationships with our Fellow Members."

"We enjoy being a part of TAG Alliances as it provides great networking opportunities for us as a firm and we have also built some great relationships with our fellow members."

––Basil Bielich; Browne Craine and Co. (Isle of Man - TIAG)

"...Very High Standards..."

"My firm's membership in TAGLaw has made us keep up with some very high standards (especially in a problematic jurisdiction like Cameroon) and has caused is to remain one of the foremost law firms in the country."

––Roland Abeng; Abeng Law Firm (Cameroon - TAGLaw)

"...Retained to Assist..."

"Jaffe was retained by Black Helterline LLP (Oregon, USA - TAGLaw) to assist their client, the Personal Representative of a Probate Estate, to enforce and to collect on a secured loan that had matured to a single asset real estate entity in Michigan (“Debtor”) that had filed a voluntary chapter 11 bankruptcy petition. We were able to negotiate and to effectuate a substantial lump sum payment as part of confirming the Debtor’s chapter 11 plan."

––Mark Kowalsky; Jaffe, Raitt, Heuer & Weiss, P.C. (Michigan, USA - TAGLaw)

"...Successfully Collaborated..."

"In 2020 we have successfully collaborated with member firms from several jurisdictions. We are grateful to Ijdelea Mihailescu (Romania - TAGLaw) for the provided support in ongoing insolvency proceedings in Romania, as well as to all firms who answered promptly our offer or assistance requests. We are also thankful for the referrals we received from Concern-Dialog Law Firm (Armenia - TAGLaw) (a commercial arbitration case) and Vainanidis, Economou & Associates Law Firm (Greece - TAGLaw) (GDPR compliance related assistance)."

––Sibina Eftenova; Popov, Arnaudov & Partners (Bulgaria - TAGLaw)

"...Enjoyed the Benefits..."

"While we truly missed the traditional in-person TAG events in 2020 that we have grown to love, our firm still enjoyed the benefits of our TAGLaw membership. For example, our firm received a referral from our friends at Reid and Riege, P.C. (Connecticut, USA - TAGLaw) regarding a contract dispute between their out-of-state client and a Kansas company. Our firm was able to swiftly resolve this matter and obtain a favorable outcome for the client."

––Greg Drumright; Martin, Pringle, Oliver, Wallace & Bauer, L.L.P.  (Kansas, USA - TAGLaw)

Close Collaboration leads to Successful Conclusion

"2019 and 2020 saw a close collaboration between the litigation teams at Cain Lamarre (Quebec, Canada - TAGLaw) (Denis Cloutier) and Harper Grey in a multi-faceted, multi-jurisdictional dispute involving injunction proceedings in the Quebec Superior Court and related corporate oppression litigation in the BC Supreme Court. Along the way, TAGLaw members firms Barack Ferrazzano in Illinois (Matt Jackson and Scott Porterfield), Hirst Applegate in Wyoming (Billie Addleman) and McLeod Law in Alberta (Brent Cooper) also pitched in. The mutual trust and close relationships between members was key to achieving a great result for the client, quickly."

––John Sullivan and Salman Bhura; Harper Grey LLP (British Columbia, Canada - TAGLaw)

"...Remaining Connected..."

"2020 has taught us all how important it is to stay connected with others – especially when things get tough. Although we were unable to meet our TAG Alliances friends in person this year, thanks to the creative thinking of the team at TAG and alliance members, Piper Alderman has enjoyed remaining connected to you all in a virtual setting!"

––Gordon Grieve; Piper Alderman (Australia - TAGLaw)

"...An Important Resource for our Clients..."

"Our participation in TAG Alliances has allowed us to be an important resource for our clients, in facilitating introductions with trusted, responsive, and competent law and accounting firms worldwide, often in times of urgent need.

For example, Aaron Spencer and Elizabeth Scott were able to introduce one of our colleagues and his wife to George Riter in Schnader Harrison Segal & Lewis LLP's (Delaware & Pennsylvania, USA - TAGLaw) trust and estate group. Our colleague’s spouse has elderly parents in a Pennsylvania long term care facility who need help handling their financial affairs. Health concerns prevent the parents from leaving facility to deal with their business issues and the facility is not permitting visitors due to the pandemic. George was able to answer questions on Pennsylvania power of attorney law that will assist the parents in granting powers of attorney to their children so that the parents can get the help they need, despite the coronavirus. It’s nice to have TAGLaw friends that can provide help in times of need."

–– Anna Derewenda; Williams Mullen (Virginia, USA - TAGLaw)
–– Elizabeth Scott; Williams Mullen (North Carolina, USA - TAGLaw)

"...Clear, Concise, and Confident..."

"We required assistance for a tax related matter for one of our AU private clients in the US. I reached out to Ray Polantz of Cohen & Company (Ohio & Michigan, USA - TIAG), having dealt with him as a U.S. Tax Specialist on several other client matters & at TAG Alliances International Conferences. Ray provided excellent client service and guidance for the client and responded in an extremely timely manner overnight to expediate the matter for ESV.

The client provided excellent feedback noting 'thanks very much for the referral, it was great to receive such clear, concise and confident answers'.

My recent experience with Ray Polantz at Cohen & Company was very pleasing and to be honest not unexpected from such a high quality firm with great people. To me, it’s another example of our TAG Alliance working together to provide our clients with the best service that we can regardless of legal jurisdictions and time zones”.

––Kurt Baker; ESV Business advice and accounting (New South Wales, Australia - TIAG)

"...We Have Developed Sustaining Personal and Business Relationships."

"We met Nick Naddell, a partner at Burness Paull LLP (Scotland - TAGLaw)at TAGLaw conferences. Nick and we spent substantial time discussing our principal specialties, experience and the quality and sophistication of the work produced at each of our firms. When Nick‘s client, a high net worth investment company, asked him for a referral to a United States law firm, Nick recommended us, Herrick, Feinstein. Herrick has now represented Nick’s client on several transactions, including a significant secured loan transaction with a developing enterprise, a pilot joint venture to test market a developing agricultural business, acquisition of a controlling interest in a business engaged in product development, manufacturing and distribution of a hard seltzer with well-known exclusive branding; and an innovative joint venture involving the acquisition of secured debt of a distressed business, with a restructuring plan that is currently being pursued. Nick is delighted that his client has been very well represented here in the U.S. and, of course, we are so pleased to have been able to help Nick’s client complete these transactions that have proven very beneficial to the client. It is a thorough pleasure spending time with fellow TAGLaw members whenever we have the chance to do so, and from those cozy conversations, we have developed sustaining personal and business relationships."

––Irwin Kishner; Herrick, Feinstein LLP (New York, USA - TAGLaw)

"The Ability to Meet our Clients’ Needs on a Global Scale..."

"The ability to meet our clients’ needs on a global scale is key to the success of our business, and our TAGLaw membership is a central pillar in achieving that. In particular, we have developed mutually beneficial relationships with Kuit Steinart Levy LLP (Manchester, England - TAGLaw), Boodle Hatfield LLP  (London, England - TAGLaw) and Herrick, Feinstein LLP (New York, USA - TAGLaw). In the last 12 months, we have referred several transactions to member firms including a construction dispute and a number of M&A, financing and restructuring transactions.

Our clients have always been impressed with the quality and responsiveness of the advice provided by the member firms. So much even that we are now receiving requests from clients to introduce them to a particular firm within the TAGLaw network so they can instruct them direct.

We would also like to note that we were impressed by the speed of which TAGLaw embraced new technology in order to continue to provide its members firms with a platform to connect with each other throughout the pandemic."

––Nick Naddell; Burness Paull LLP (Scotland - TAGLaw)

"...Hassle-free for us and our Clients ."

"As a member of TAG Alliances we are happy and honored to have the possibility of cooperation with law firms in different jurisdictions which helps to make the process hassle-free for us and our clients. During 2020, Concern Dialog had two successful cooperation cases with TAG Alliances member law firms, where we connected them with our clients in the scope of due diligence and arbitration procedures.

First was an arbitration case with a potential Bulgarian client who had a dispute with an Armenian partner in debt collection. As the arbitration process had begun in Bulgaria, we connected them with Popov, Arnaudov & Partners (Bulgaria - TAGLaw) to take care of the arbitration process there. When the case enters our jurisdiction, we will support them in Armenia.

The latter was a refinancing case in London, UK in the scope of which there was a need of a due diligence procedure for our client's bank. Personally knowing the TAG Alliances member colleague from London thanks to the annual meetings, we contacted them and they introduced their real estate team to the case, which tirelessly organized the mortgage, registration and release processes in a tight schedule.

Being an active member of TAG Alliances, we are sure that in the upcoming years we will deepen and strengthen the cooperation within this alliance and will have more success stories - both inbound and outbound."

––Aram Orbelyan; Concern-Dialog Law Firm (Armenia - TAGLaw)

"...Helping Businesses and Individuals Succeed..."

"At Anderson Anderson & Brown LLP (AAB) (Scotland - TIAG) we have benefitted from our TAG Alliances membership in so many different ways. Primarily this is a result of the relationships we have built across the network which has brought new business our way and has in turn enabled us to work in collaboration with other firms to support our own clients as they have grown and expanded their global reach.

We travel to our clients, wherever they are, to understand their business better and invest in our clients by also investing in our relationships with local advisors through utilising the network. This year, our relationship with TAG and the firms within the network has understandably been very different as we all moved our activity online. Prior to this, we were fortunate enough to attend one of our planned visits to Texas in February.

Historically, our firm has undertaken a lot of work in Houston, and we are continuing to extend our reach across Texas. Thanks to TAG, we had arranged to visit Dallas-based Law Firm Munsch Hardt Kopf & Harr, P.C. (Texas, USA - TAGLaw). Greg Noschese and team really welcomed us and looked after us really well across our visit which gave us a greater understanding of potential synergies between our firms going forward.

We have already established a great relationship with Weaver (Texas, USA - TIAG) in Houston and on this same trip we were introduced to new members of their team based in Dallas. We connected with Vince Houk and have already had work referred to us as a result of this new relationship.

At AAB, we tell clients that our membership with TAG Alliances is so much more than a loose collection of national and international firms, we’re part of a global network, unified in our approach to helping businesses and individuals succeed, wherever they are in the world."

––Neil Dinnes; Anderson Anderson & Brown LLP (AAB) (Scotland - TIAG)
