Casner & Edwards Attorneys, Sharon C. Lincoln & Stéphanie Smith, Speak at MCLE’s ‘1st Look’ FFCRA & the CARES Act Webinar

Casner & Edwards LLP Partners Sharon C. Lincoln and Stéphanie Smith spoke at the Massachusetts Continuing Legal Education’s webinar, “‘1st Look’ at FFCRA & the CARES Act: Making Sense of Federal Relief for Businesses & Nonprofits,” on April 8, 2020. The webinar provided listeners with an overview and guide into the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (CARES Act) and the Families First Coronavirus Response Act (FFCRA). Smith discussed the interplay between the FFCRA and the CARES Act, while Lincoln covered the CARES Act, including:

  • Relief afforded specifically to charitable organizations;
  • Paycheck Protection Program and EIDL Loans;
  • Payroll tax relief and tax credits; and
  • Relief afforded to businesses and nonprofit organizations with more than 500 employees. 

Lincoln advises nonprofit entities on the wide range of issues related to their tax-exempt status, including formation, funding, governance, executive compensation (including deferred compensation), regulatory compliance, restructuring, international grant making, lobbying, unrelated business income, and mergers and acquisitions. In addition, she assists clients in matters directly involving the Internal Revenue Service, the Massachusetts Attorney General’s Office, and the Massachusetts Department of Revenue, including audits, appeals and ruling requests.

Smith counsels employers on a wide range of employment matters, including hiring and firing, performance management and disciplinary action, reductions in force, leaves of absence and other workplace accommodations, enforcement of restrictive covenants and protection of intellectual property.  She also assists employers comply with federal and state employment laws, including wage and hour laws, leave laws, background checks, and represents clients in litigation and administrative matters.
