Herrick Announces Formation of Nordic Practice

Herrick is proud to announce the formation of its Nordic Practice, led by Deborah Koplovitz, a partner in the Litigation Department.

A growing part of the firm’s broader international offerings, Herrick’s Nordic Practice delivers comprehensive legal services to Nordic clients pursuing investment and business opportunities in the U.S. Tapping into the collective strength of Herrick’s real estate, corporate, tax, government relations and litigation lawyers, the new practice draws on their extensive experience to guide clients through the complex legal issues and transaction structures inherent in cross-border investments.

The initiative – led by Deborah Koplovitz, who has lived in Norway, is fluent in Norwegian and extremely well-versed in its culture – gives Nordic and U.S.-based business clients a competitive advantage pursuing regional and international business objectives. When appropriate and safe in accordance with healthy and safety guidelines around the COVID-19 pandemic, Koplovitz will resume travel between the Nordic countries and the U.S. to conduct on-the-ground meetings to enhance client service.

“Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, and Iceland are some of the most entrepreneurial, forward-thinking economies in the world, and enterprises from these countries are quite active in the United States market,” Koplovitz said. “Even though most of our Nordic clients speak English quite well, cultural and business differences between each of the Nordic countries and the United States can still present unique challenges for enterprises engaging in cross-border dealings. With the launch of this group, we are able to leverage Herrick’s cross-disciplinary experience to offer our clients a competitive advantage in their business dealings in this dynamic region of the world.”

Additionally, Herrick’s lawyers have close relationships with leading Nordic law and accounting firms, which allows for close collaboration and coordination of legal services. As a result of these relationships, Herrick is able to confidently refer clients and contacts, and help make valuable connections when needed. Herrick also adds value, whenever possible, by introducing clients to joint venture partners, financing sources, and investment opportunities.

Barbaros Karaahmet, Herrick’s Chief Operating Partner, said, “With Deborah joining the firm in late 2020, we are thrilled to be able to leverage her ties with Norway and her unique experience to strategically expand Herrick’s international offerings. In addition to our Israel and Turkey practices, the Nordic practice will give us another strong set of capabilities to offer our clients as they pursue global business opportunities.”
