Herrick Announces Expanded Capabilities in Affordable Housing with the additions of Karol S. Robinson and Brett J. Gottlieb

Herrick is pleased to announce the expanded capabilities of the Affordable Housing Team with the arrival of partner Karol S. Robinson and special counsel Brett J. Gottlieb to the firm.

Karol joined Herrick as a partner in late 2020, bringing her extensive experience with affordable housing and non-profit organizations. Karol is known for her integrity and hands-on, direct working relationships with her clients, advising on day-to-day operational and corporate governance matters, restructuring and refinancing transactions and related general transactional work. In addition, her experience includes advising clients on compliance with various federal, state and city governmental housing agency regulations and guidelines.

Brett joined as special counsel in April 2021 and represents real estate developers in the New York City real property tax incentives program 421-a, also known as Affordable New York. Brett counsels clients on this current program which offers a substantial tax benefit for residential property developers who commit to providing affordable housing. Additionally, Brett counsels commercial developers, landlords and tenants on The Industrial and Commercial Abatement Program (ICAP) and the Food Retail Expansion to Support Health benefit (FRESH).

The current economic and public funding climate present ever increasing complexities in affordable housing and community development transactions, making it critical to work with seasoned attorneys who understand the field, have experience with federal, state and local housing programs, and with the creativity to find innovative solutions to the multifaceted challenges frequently involved in projects.

Karol and Brett join Herrick’s respected and experienced interdisciplinary team that draws upon the skills of our veteran attorneys in the representation of clients, including for-profit and non-profit organizations, developers, general contractors and builders, public and private financial institutions and governmental agencies in multifaceted affordable real estate transactions of all sizes.

Herrick brings together real estate, finance (including community development lending and tax-exempt bond financing), tax credit syndication, zoning and land use, condominium and cooperative structuring, not-for-profit governance, community economic development, and related specialties under one roof to service our clients working on affordable housing and community economic development projects.

"We are thrilled to offer additional services to Herrick’s clients in the area of affordable housing and community development," said Belinda Schwartz, chair of Herrick’s Real Estate Department, which now counts 60+ attorneys among its ranks. "Our existing capabilities have been complemented by the arrival of Karol and Brett and their experience and focus on these assets."
