Published in: ICLG

Awatif Mohammad Shoqi Advocates & Legal Consultancy is pleased to announce the publication of the United Arab Emirates chapter of ICLG – Family Laws and Regulations 2027, authored by the firm’s Founder and Principal, Mrs. Awatif Al Khouri.

Published as part of the latest edition of the International Comparative Legal Guides’ Family Law publication, the UAE chapter provides an updated overview of the legal framework governing family and personal status matters in the United Arab Emirates.

The chapter examines a broad range of family law issues, including divorce and jurisdiction, financial arrangements following divorce, marital agreements, cohabitation, child maintenance, parental responsibility and custody, international family matters, and recent developments within the UAE family law system.

Particular attention is given to the evolving legislative framework following the introduction of Federal Decree-Law No. 41 of 2024 on Personal Status, which replaced the previous federal personal status legislation and introduced important changes affecting divorce, maintenance, custody, marital conditions and other family matters. The chapter also considers the civil family law regimes available under Federal Decree-Law No. 41 of 2022 on Civil Personal Status and the civil family law framework applicable in Abu Dhabi.

With more than three decades of legal practice in the UAE, Mrs. Awatif Al Khouri has extensive experience advising and representing clients in divorce, child custody and visitation, maintenance, guardianship, inheritance, relocation disputes, financial settlements and the enforcement of family court judgments. Her work frequently involves expatriate families and matters with cross-border elements, including questions of jurisdiction, foreign law and the recognition and enforcement of foreign judgments.

The publication of the UAE chapter reflects the firm’s continued contribution to professional legal publications and the wider discussion surrounding the development of family law in the UAE.

Awatif Mohammad Shoqi Advocates & Legal Consultancy is pleased to contribute its UAE perspective to ICLG – Family Laws and Regulations 2027 and to share practical insight into a rapidly developing area of UAE law with an international readership.

The complete publication on UAE chapter is available to read on ICLG.
