Piper Alderman Assists Gilat with NBN Satellite Deal

On 6 May 2011 it was announced that Optus Networks Pty Ltd (Optus), with major supply by Gilat Satellite Networks Ltd.’s subsidiaries, including Gilat Satellite Networks Australia (Gilat), won a $200m contract to provide satellite internet services across Australia as part of the Australian Government’s National Broadband Network Company’s Interim Satellite Service.

Piper Alderman (NSW, Australia) advised Gilat on its major supply contract with Optus, valued at up to $120m over the next five years. The agreement with Optus is to provide a SkyEdge II Very Small Aperture Terminal (VSAT) network including installation, operation and maintenance.

The agreement provides for an initial network of 11 SkyEdge II hubs and 20,000 SkyEdge II VSATs expected to be deployed within three years and possible expansion of the network to include further hubs and up to 48,000 VSATs.

The Piper Alderman team working with Gilat on this deal was led by partner, Tim Coleman. Tim was assisted by corporate partner Robert Postema and associate Sina Kassra.

Tim Coleman said:

“We are thrilled to have assisted Gilat on a deal of such significance, not only for the company but for Australia. It will change the face of broadband internet in Australia, bringing much needed services to regional and rural areas and we are very proud to be involved.”
