Uruguay: Green Hydrogen Roadmap

A few days ago, Uruguay’s government officially presented its roadmap for the development of the green-hydrogen-sourced energy in Uruguay (the “Roadmap”). The Roadmap will be open for consultation until 15 August 2022.

The Roadmap lays down the main pillars of Uruguay’s master plan regarding green hydrogen.

In accordance with the Roadmap, Uruguay’s natural resources can reach an annual green hydrogen production of approx. 1 million tons and a turnover of up to USD 2.1 billion per year (in addition to the potential of generating more than 30,000 quality jobs).

The Roadmap includes 3 main stages over time: (i) up to 2025, the government will seek to implement certain regulations on green hydrogen and develop the first pilot projects, especially for the domestic market; (ii) between 2026 and 2030, the government will focus on implementing the first projects to export green hydrogen; and (iii) between 2031 and 2040, the government’s efforts will be aimed at consolidating Uruguay’s position as a large-scale exporter of green-hydrogen-sourced fuel.
