Contributing To The Dialogue On Child Online Safety

On the 2026 Safe Internet Day, important discussions took place across Malta and Gozo focusing on child online protection, under the shared message: Safe Internet. Safe Children. Strong Society.

For today’s children, the digital world is not separate from daily life, it is where they learn, interact, and form relationships. While this space offers undeniable benefits, it also presents challenges that require careful attention. Creating a safer online environment demands awareness, education, cooperation, and a clear focus on children’s rights and wellbeing.

Speaking during a dedicated conference, organised by The Malta Foundation for the Wellbeing of Society, Partner Dr Katia Mercieca emphasised the need to empower both parents and children through education. She also pointed out that despite existing legal measures, shortcomings remain, highlighting the importance of more robust, coordinated, and preventative legal approaches to ensure effective protection for minors online.
